Newly appointed State Congress president Shantaram Naik on Saturday made it clear that the Congress, under his leadership, was not keen on toppling the ruling BJP-led coalition alliance and that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s dispensation would fall on its own.
"As far as formation of Government is concerned, I have said that we are not going to pull down any Government, but if the Government collapses and I think it will collapse very soon, then we will not shirk from responsibility of forming Government," Naik told at a Press conference at the State Congress headquarters on Saturday.
Naik, who is a sitting Rajya Sabha MP, took over from his predecessor luizinho Faleiro on Friday, following his formal appointment by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. His appointment as State Congress chief comes in wake of opposition to Faleiro's leadership by a section of the party's senior leadership, especially MlAs. Naik, however, said that he would work to address any dissent in the party.
