Intake and rising consumption of tobacco among women is becoming one of the main causes of infertility these days, experts say.
Dr Archana Dhawan Bajaj, Gynecologist and Obstetrician, Nurture IVF Centre explained that the intake of tobacco is rising in women these days and is affecting their fertility making it difficult for a woman to conceive. “Several health hazards are related to intake of tobacco especially smoking during pregnancy such as-premature birth of
the baby, birth defects in babies can be seen like cleft lip or cleft palate, chances of miscarriages are also high, problems with the
placenta- the placenta can separate from the womb causing bleeding which is dangerous to the mother and the baby,” she said.
Doctors have always suggested that in case someone wants to quit taking tobacco but is addicted, the
person must take help. They also warn that passive
smoking is equally
harmful.
“In worst cases sometimes due to high tobacco intake by the pregnant women can lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It is recommended to quit the intake of tobacco if you are planning to get pregnant and consult your health expert immediately if you are unable to quit tobacco intake.. Tobacco kills and is a threat to the development of you and your baby’s health.”
