Suryanelli rape victim renews plea for probe against Kurien

Published on:

The Kerala High Court on Saturday deferred for orders a petition filed by the victim of Kerala’s sensational Suryanelli serial rape scandal of 1996 seeking orders to the police for reinvestigating the alleged involvement of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien on the basis of the disclosure made by third accused Dharmarajan, a lawyer. The victim, now 33, sought in her petition a fresh probe against Kurien on the basis of Dharmarajan’s disclosure, abrogation of the verdict of the Sessions Court in Thodupuzha rejecting her plea for the same, quashing of the HC order discharging Kurien from the case and removal of the adverse comments made against her by the HC earlier. The girl, who was raped by 42 men for a period of 41 days in 1996 when she was just 16, also sought investigation against two other persons, PK Jamal and Unnikrishnan, to whom references were made by Dharmarajan, who had claimed that he was eyewitness to Kurien’s visit to the girl at a rest house in Kumili, Idukki.
