International singer Natalie Di luccio, who performed with The Magnets recently, tells SHAlINI SAKSENA what capella is and her stint in Bollywood
India is all about singing with instruments. How do you think people will react to your performanceIJ
I think people enjoyed it! A capella music by The Magnets is so perfect you won’t even notice the absence of instruments. Instead, you will be surprised and shocked by what the human voice can do. This will be something new and fresh for many in India as a capella music has not been explored so much here.
For those who don’t know what a capella is, could you kindly explainIJ
A capella is basically singing without any instrumental backing. It is solely performing music with the human voice. In the case of The Magnets, it is a group of singers and a beatboxer, we have the world’s beatbox champion Ball-Zee joining on this tour. The sounds that he can make will absolutely blow your mind. You won’t miss instruments at all. In fact, you'll be so surprised that you’ll just be trying to figure out how these boys can do what they do.
How did you get associated with The MagnetsIJ
I was invited to perform with them for a show in 2016 by the production house AGP World. That is when we realised we really gel well together and can do an entertaining and unique show! AGP World then decided to bring us back together and take this show to more audiences through public shows in India! Which I’m super thrilled about.
The experience of performing with them...
It is a great experience as we have a lovely chemistry together on stage. Also, it’s really different from my solo shows that I do, so it gives me the chance to get out of my comfort zone and try something new!
Tell us about your stint in Bollywood.
It began back in 2009 when I received an invitation via MySpace to come to India and collaborate on a fusion album. While in Mumbai, I was introduced to the Bollywood scene and I found it so fascinating. While visiting, I heard this song Tu Jaane Na. After returning to Canada to continue my studies as an opera singer, I randomly decided to sing the song on YouTube and the video went viral and become the most watched video in India that day. Then AR Rahman saw one of my videos and invited me to join him on tour along with invitations to sing in Bollywood films. It was a path I never imagined as a western classical singer, but I’m so grateful for the unique opportunities and experiences.
