Navjot Singh Sidhu is likely to formally join the Congress on January 9. The cricketer-turned-politician, who resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rajya Sabha membership in September last year, is likely to contest the Punjab Assembly elections from Amritsar (East) from where his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu was an MlA. She had joined the Congress in November.

Sidhu is also expected to be a prominent campaigner for the Congress during the upcoming Assembly elections. The Congress Election Committee, which is to meet on January 10, is likely to announce his candidature along with others on the day.

Sidhu’s entry into Congress comes after much speculation about his move given the fact that he had even hinted moving towards the Aam Aadmi Party camp. It is believed that AAP had even offered him the post of deputy CM in case the party manages to form government. However, of late, Sidhu had been showing inclination towards the Congress party.

“Navjot Singh Sidhu will contest from the constituency of his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu on a Congress ticket,” Captain Amarinder Singh, Punjab Congress president had announced last week.
