The Shiv Sena will file a petition before President Pranab Mukherjee seeking mercy for 13 policemen, who were sentenced early this month by a city court to life imprisonment in the lakhan Bhaiya fake encounter case.
Announcing this here on Saturday evening, a Sena spokesperson said his party would launch a signature campaign in police colonies of Mumbai, seeking support of residents there for the 13 “fearless” policemen — who were among the 21 convicts sentenced by a city sessions court to life imprisonment on July 12 for killing fugitive gangster Ramnarayan Gupta alias lakhan Bhaiya in November, 2006.
“The signature campaign will be held in all the police colonies of Mumbai from 5 pm to 8 pm on July 29 (Monday). Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has appealed common citizens to take part in the signature campaign,” the Sena spokesperson said.
