In yet another incident of sexual harassment in the prestigious Shantiniketan, a Bangladeshi girl was allegedly raped by her local guardian who was also a Bangladeshi. The man had been arrested, Birbhum SP Alok Rajoria said.
The girl, a boarder in the University, told the police that her local guardian raped her and clicked her photographs which he had threatened to make public should she not continue to “oblige” him, sources said adding investigations were on.
The victim, who is currently in a hospital, stayed in a hostel and the man lived outside the campus, Rajoria said, adding a senior inspector was investigating the case. The incident reportedly took place on Friday and the girl lodged the complaint on Saturday.
Shantiniketan had been in the news for all the wrong reasons including sexual harassment with a Sikkim student inside the campus few days ago. She was forcibly taken inside a room, stripped and photographed by three of her seniors who also warned her against making the matter public.
Both the authorities and the police allegedly did the precious little only after things hit the national headlines. The girl’s father finally withdrew his ward and went back to Sikkim with her traumatised daughter.
Set up by Poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Shantiniketan is a Central University. No top official of the University would make any comment on the Friday’s incident.
