Traffic on NH24 grinded to a halt for an hour after two sewage pipeline workers asphyxiated to death in Pilkhuwa town of Hapur district.
Vijay Sharma (42) and Vikram (28) were working on an underground sewer line near RR Inter College on NH24 when they lost consciousness brought on by toxic levels of methane gas and oxygen depletion. However, contractor Rajiv Tyagi claimed asphyxiation could not be the cause of death since it was an unused pipeline. Irate residents nevertheless demanded compensation since this Central Government-funded project was purportedly not adhering to mandated safety strictures. “We shall compensate the families and inquire into the circumstance which led to the two workers to lose their lives,” assured Kanhaiya Singh Yadav, SDM, Pilkhuwa.
