SANJAY KAPOOR has returned to the big screen as an out-of-the-box business tycoon in Shaandaar. He talks to SANGEETA YADAV about his weird look and the desire for TV shows

You play a Sindhi weirdo inShaandaar. As a comeback isn’t that, well, weirdIJ

It’s an out-of-the-box character which I have never played in my career. Playing a Sindhi character for the first time, I had to get the diction right which was an interesting challenge. My attire is loud. My look leaves Bhappi lehri behind in wearing gold jewellery. Even the shoes are golden. But Shaandaar ushered a new phase in my life.

What do you have to say about the Vikas Bahl’s style of filmmakingIJ

Vikas makes everything look believable. My character walks on the very thin edge of buffoonery. I accepted this role because Vikas was at the helm. With any other director, I would not have.

What makes you relate to the filmIJ

In an arranged marriage, more than the romance of the girl and the boy, it is an amalgamation of two families and businesses. Even today, a lot of corporate marriages happen for business. But we have dealt with and fought the issue in a fun way instead of getting serious about it.

Who is your best critic in the familyIJ

Everybody watches the movie and is very critical in a positive way, be it my children Jahaan and Shanaya, my wife Maheep Sandhu, my brothers Boney and Anil or my nephew and nieces. We talk about things which can be done better next time.

What there is your to-do listIJ

I am in an interesting phase of my career, working as a producer and an actor too. It’s not necessary to get to play lead roles. There are scripts which require senior actors. The evolution of cinema has opened avenues for senior actors. If I get something good on TV, I’m open to that too. I wouldn’t mind judging a reality show.
