Saradha scam: Madan Mitra released on bail

Published on:

West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra, arrested in the multi-crore rupee Saradha scam late last year was on Saturday granted bail after more than 11 months of incarceration by a local court even as the CBI failed to submit the case diary and produce substantial evidence against him, the jailed Trinamool leader’s counsel Ashok Mukherjee said.

While the Opposition left, Congress et al cried foul alleging a “tacit understanding between the BJP and the Trinamool” bands of Bengal ruling party supporters spilled on to the streets bursting crackers, blocking roads and celebrating Diwali a full 10 day ahead of time.

Mitra who had for the majority of his jail period spent in a Government super-specialty hospital was arrested by the CBI in December last year on charges of criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy.

Even as the CBI counsel sought time from the court showing non-availability of the case diary Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Partho Das granted bail on a bond of Rs 2 lakh. He was also asked to submit his passport and directed not to move out of the State. He was also asked by the court to appear as and when the Agency wanted him to do so.
