A 20-year-old food delivery boy providing dabba services to students in South Delhi turned out to be a thief, stealing the electronic goods of students. Working with the local eateries in Vasant Vihar area, the accused, 20-year-old Noor Islam, alias Rahul was arrested in connection with 17 cases of theft and burglary of electronic goods of students living in the hostels of JNU and IIT in the Munirka village area.
Islam has been committing thefts for the past two and a half years. “The accused told us that since he was working as a food delivery boy and barely managed to make Rs500 in two days, he stole the electronic goods to random people at the bus stand. Depending on the mobile phone and the laptop, he charged anything up to Rs1000 to earn quick money,” said a senior investigating officer.
Chinmoy Biswal, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police 1 (South) said, “For the past six months, Noor Islam has been stealing electronic goods of the students living in the Munirka area. So far we have solved 17 cases of burglary and theft and have recovered two laptops and six mobile phones.”
Police said Noor Islam, a native of West Bengal, had been living in Munirka village where he was working as a delivery boy for various local eateries. In the wee hours of the morning, Noor Islam would come to collect the empty tiffins, delivered a night before and on finding the students sleeping and the doors of their rooms often unlatched, he began the spree of stealing their belongings. “The accused said that this was an invitation to crime as he started stealing mobile phones, wallets, cash and other expensive things from the unsuspecting students. Many residents were known to him. They always found him good mannered, thus he never came under suspicion,” said Biswal
On April 4, a police team was alerted by one informer about a delivery boy who was carrying a bag unusual in his profession. The team swiftly acted on the input and cornered the food delivery boy who was found carrying a laptop.
On being questioned, Noor Islam first gave an innocuous answer. On sustained enquiry, he confessed that he has stolen the laptop following which a case was registered at the Vasant Vihar police station and Noor Islam was arrested.
