Rain takes its toll on Capital roads

Published on:

Heavy rain wrecked havoc in the city as commuters faced tough time wading through waterlogged roads. Waterlogging resulted in massive traffic snarls in many parts of the national Capital,  forcing vehicles to move at snail’s pace.

The Delhi Traffic Police was constantly updating Delhiites about the traffic situation. They were advising motorists and commuters to avoid congested routes and take other available routes to reach to their destinations.

Waterlogging was reported from areas of GT Karnal Road from Singhu Border to Azadpur near Jahangirpuri and Adarsh Nagar Metro Station. Situation was no different on the NH-9 near Ghazipur Murga Mandi. Due to heavy rain, water-logging was reported at Hathi Khana Chowk, Sadar Bazaar. Areas from Nangloi to Bahadurgarh near Mundka Metro Station and Rajdhani Park Metro Station were also waterlogged.

Traffic was heavy in the carriageway from Ashok Vihar towards Azadpur, Model Town towards Azadpur due to water-logging. Traffic from Karol Bagh to Patel Nagar was diverted to Dev Prakash Shastri Marg towards Inderpuri.

Cab companies also hiked theie fares due to the rain and commuters between Delhi and Gurugram bore the brunt of the surge pricing coupled with non — availability of fewer cabs.

“The civic agencies responsible for maintaining drains have failed to synchronies their efforts to desilt drains before the onset of monsoon. Meeting after meeting was called on the issue but nothing was done on the ground to save people from water- logging,” a senior corporation official said requesting anonymity.

Earlier this week, South Corporation Mayor Narendra Chawla claimed that the civic body had desilted 246 major drains having depth more than 4 ft with total length around 5604.08 km under its jurisdiction.  However, sources in the corporation said that desilting has been done on paper only.
