Rahul kicks off Cong's Assam poll campaign

AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took part in a massive roadshow in Assam’s minority-dominated Barpeta district even as he appealed to the voters in the district to repeat Bihar in the forthcoming Assam Assembly polls next year.

Rahul Gandhi arrived in Assam’s capital Guwahati Friday afternoon on a two-day visit.

Gandhi launched an attack on the BJP-led Government at the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that although the Prime Minister had made several promises during his visit to Assam about a year ago, none of them has been fulfilled so far.

“Modiji promised that black money in foreign banks will be brought back and at least Rs 15 lakh each will be deposited in the bank accounts of each Indian. However, now whenever I mention about this people laugh like you laughed,” said Gandhi while pointing out to one of the audiences.

“The BJP is known for their communal politics and they only know to play politics over communal clashes. If you look at the States where elections have been held recently, there would be at least one communal violence. This is what they do. They make Indians fight against each other and spread hatred and violence,” he said.

Citing the BJP’s recent debacle in Bihar, the AICC leader further said that although Modiji had addressed 25 to 30 public rallies in Bihar before the polls, yet he failed to save the party from the debacle in the elections.

Appreciating the ruling Congress in Assam, Rahul Gandhi said that it is the Congress party who brought peace to Assam. “I still remember there were violence and law and order problems in Assam 15 years back. The Congress Government led by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi brought peace to the State. The India Today magazine has now ranked Assam as number 1 as far as the roads and infrastructure is concerned,” he said adding that this is possible as Congress connects people and not divide them in the name of religion and caste.
