The Delhi Police on Saturday registered a case at Parliament Street police station of threat to the life of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar after posters offering Rs11 lakh reward for killing Kanhaiya surfaced in the national Capital on Saturday.
The poster bearing Adarsh Sharma’s name stated, “Whosoever shoots Kanhaiya Kumar, who is also an anti-national, will be rewarded Rs11 lakh from the Purvanchal Sena.” The posters in Hindi had phone number of Sharma, who claims to work to end corruption, poverty and unemployment.
Demanding appropriate action against Kanhaiya, Sharma said, “I wish for quick justice,” while adding that he believes in the present judiciary. He said, “Kumar had insulted Mother India and raised anti-national slogans which made him the traitor. We want the traitor dead.”
Sharma said, “We trust court but the judgment takes long to come and we want quick decision hence Rs11 lakh shall be rewarded to the one who kills him”.
“We work for the people of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar. Kanhaiya’s house is just 10 kms from my house in Bihar. Our land does not produce such anti-nationals. This is why I have decided to do this,” he said. Taking cognisance of the open-threat to Kumar’s life, senior police official said, “Appropriate action will be taken against the one found guilty.”
On Friday the BJP Yuva Morcha leader Kuldeep Varshnay announced a reward of Rs5 lakh for cutting off Kumar’s tongue for speaking against the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, he was expelled on Saturday from his primary membership by the president of the unit for six years. President of district unit of BJP Harish Shakya said, “Varshnay’s statement is his personal one and the party has nothing to do with it...He has been expelled from the primary membership of the party for giving such a statement without the consent of party office bearers.”
Kumar was arrested on February 12 for allegedly raising anti-national slogans inside the campus during an event to mark the third anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s hanging on February 9.
He was released from Tihar Jail on March 3 on six-month interim bail in the sedition case. Kanhaiya was beaten up by lawyers at Patiala House Court.
