Acting tough against the poachers, the forest guards in Kaziranga National Park has killed one poacher from the Bagori range of the park, the park officials said on Saturday. The killing of the poacher took place on the wee hours on Saturday, park officials said while adding that six rounds of live ammunition of the .303 rifle were recovered from the slain poacher.
“There were about six poachers in a group that have entered the park last evening. However, we have received a tip off and launched an operation immediately. The guards came face to face with the group at Bagori range around wee hours today,” said Divisional Forest officer of park SK Seal Sarma.
“There of heavy exchange of firing from both the sides and we could recover the body of one of the poacher in the morning today. The rest of the group however, managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness,” he said.
This is the sixth poachers to be killed inside the park this year. On the night of January 13 this year, the forest guards inside the park killed three poachers in three separate incidents and recovered two .303 rifles, two gun silencers and a pistol from the slain poachers.
Earlier this month, another two poachers were killed in an encounter with forest guards in the Bagori Range area of the national park. It may be mentioned here that the poachers have killed four one-horned rhinos in Assam this year. While three rhinos were killed inside the park, one was killed in civilian area in Nagaon district a few days back.
