Heralding more pedestrian-friendly services, a slew of initiatives are being introduced by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in its upcoming phase-III project. Subways have been planned to facilitate road crossing at Munirka, RK Puram, IIT, Hauz Khas, Panchsheel Park, Chirag Delhi, GK Enclave, Nehru Place, South Extension and ITO stations. Subway entry will be open to those not using Metro too.
The height of footpaths near entry/exit points will be reduced and they will be tiled to facilitate comfortable movement of pedestrians and wheelchair-bound passengers. Senior Delhi Metro officials added that in the current phase, the Metro is expanding to the suburbs and rural belts.
A senior official said in phase I and II, Delhi Metro had primarily catered to urban commuters, with elaborate parking facilities at stations. "We have decided to provide pedestrian-friendly facilities in the third phase," he added.
With the help of the traffic department, DMRC is also planning to provide zebra crossings near entry/exit points, traffic-calming measures such as requisite signage.
