A committee headed by former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Mukul Mudgal, set up by the Government for probing US giant Walmart's alleged lobbying activities to enter India, submitted its report to Corporate Affairs Minister Sachin Pilot on Saturday at his residence.
The report was submitted by Justice Mudgal to the minister, though no details of it could be procured.Efforts to contact Pilot as well as ministry officials regarding details of the probe eliticted no response.
The panel had been set up by the Government in January this year in the wake of a major political uproar over the issue which had even led to stalling of Parliament.
The panel mainly looked into “whether Walmart undertook any activities in India in contravention of any Indian law”, and any other matter relevant to this issue.
There was political uproar following reports about Walmart's alleged lobbying among the US lawmakers since 2008 for facilitating its entry into the Indian market.
The Government in December 2012 had assured Parliament to get the matter probed by a retired judge.
As per US Congressional records of lobbying disclosure reports, the company spent a total amount of $ 6.13 million (about `33 crore) on lobbying for various issues."
