A day after mother of a gang-rape victim was shot at by unidentified men in South East Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area, the Delhi Police on Saturday claimed to have arrested the main accused from Bijnor in the gangrape case of the 15-year-old girl.
According to Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-east), the accused, Sajid, was absconding since the date of registration of the gangrape case.
“Raids were carried out since the case was registered. Teams were formed to trace him. On late Friday night, Sajid was traced in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh from where he was brought to Delhi. He confessed to his involvement in the gangrape, after which he was arrested on Saturday evening,” said the DCP.
On Friday morning, the 47-year-old mother of gangrape victim, was allegedly shot at outside her residence in Southeast Delhi’s Zakir Nagar by two motorcycle-borne youths. The woman had launched a campaign against the four accused who had been sexually assaulting her teenage daughter, leaving her three months pregnant.
The injured woman was admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre where she underwent surgery. Her condition is stated to be out of danger.
Police suspect she was attacked by hired criminals. The girl — over three-month pregnant — was allegedly gang-raped by four men, including a private builder, over a period of six months in South-east Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area.
According to the DCP, Sajid will be produced before the court on Sunday. The official added that Sajid will be thoroughly interrogated.
Police said that the other accused in the case would be identified after Sajid’s interrogation.
Meanwhile, with respect to the case of firing on the mother of the teenage girl, some suspects have been identified and their possible hideouts are being raided for tracing them.
Another police officer, privy to the investigation said that the police will get a clearer picture of the suspects involved in both firing and gangrape case post the interrogation.
