Actor Kunal Kapoor is in a happy space. He has wrapped up the shoot for a satire to be released soon, has penned a few scripts, his portal driving charity is doing good and his love life going strong. For a man, who believes in setting a fashion statement, Kapoor is all praise for designer Sachi Singh, for showing courage in coming up with a men’s jewellery line. Deebashree Mohanty chats him up
There is something about Delhi that attracts Kunal Kapoor so much so that he claims to be in love with the place. This is his third visit to the city and he is making the most of it. “Don’t know what brings me to Delhi so often. The food, the weather, people and the galiyan, everything is buzzing. I like that the most. Mumbai is sort of depressing these days,” Kapoor who was in the Capital to promote a jewellery fashion show by Sachi Singh, says.
Apart from a charity portal that takes away a major chunk of his time, Kapoor has just wrapped up shooting for a Nila Madhav Panda film, Kaun Kitne Paani Mein to be released shortly. “KKPM is a satire on water issues and how it is soon developing to be a major thing in all parts of the country. If things proceed in the similar way, we are heading towards a water war. And this problem is not limited to the low income belt at all. Water woes is a common problem,” Kapoor says.
He warns that the film may sound like fun but it has a very serious takeaway for everyone. “I strongly believe that movies should be entertaining. But if you can give out a social message without compromising on the masala, then why notIJ Rang De Basanti was a perfect example. It was full on entertainment with a relevant social message. Our story writers should concentrate on this aspect while making cinema,” he tells you.
RDB is one of his favourite films and his co-stars are friends for life. “We were like a team. Months after the shooting for this film was over, we used to move about like a gang. Sadly, some of us got busy and the camaraderie broke. Now we keep in touch but its difficult to spend a lot of time together. Mumbai does that to you. It makes you forget relationships because you are chasing after your profession,” he tells you.
Moving on from this pensive subject, Kapoor says he is in his happy space at the moment and life is beautiful. Can we hear wedding bells soonIJ “Hopefully. But there is a lot of work to wrap up before that,” the 36 year-old-actor informs. He is engaged to his girlfriend of two-years, Naina Bachchan, daughter of Ajitabh and Ramola Bachchan but Kapoor likes to keep his private life to himself. “When the time is right, I shall tell,” is all he is willing to divulge.
After the likes of Hollywood A listers including Edward Norton , Kevin Bacon and Matt Damon, it is Kapoor from Bollywood who has taken the initiative to use the Internet to benefit the charity space in India. “We launched Ketto in August 2012. It is an online ‘giving’ platform where you can start ‘giving’ with as less as Rs 100. Over the years, our subscribers base has grown,” Kapoor says.
At the moment though, he is in his ‘writers’ element and has already penned a few scripts. These revolve around relevant issues prevalent in the society. “I love watching films like Dabangg and Hera Pheri. They bring out the fun side of life and everyone could do with humour,” he informs.
But why the ever serious, grim look on his face thenIJ “It’s my own style, I guess (laughs),” he says, adding that men’s accessories and jewellery is finding a niche market in India. “I am so thankful that young and talented designers like Sachi have dedicated a line towards men.
“As an executive director of Motiwala and Sons, her selection of jewellery is exemplary. I have seen men in Rajasthan sport jewels from head to toe and they look very handsome,” he remarks. His style statement — a muted summer jacket paired with loose fitting jeans and a formal shirt.
