Forty nine police officers, including head constable and constables from the North-East district, have been transferred to the third battalion after a vigilance enquiry found them guilty of involvement with a betting syndicate. Earlier Station House Officer (SHO) of Mandawali was sent to district lines and an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of the sub-division was transferred for similar charges after their involvement cropped up in an online betting racket.

According to senior police officials of the Delhi Police, a local person had approached the public grievance cell in Nand Nagri area and filed a complaint against illegal activities as well as a betting ring being run in the area and being patronised by police personnel. “The complainant had clicked incriminating photographs and submitted them to the public grievance team following which a vigilance enquiry was ordered,” said a senior police official. The report of the vigilance enquiry revealed lapse on the part of the beat staff, constables and head constables of Nand Nagri area.

“We wanted to set an example that dereliction of duty will not be tolerated. Forty nine policemen of different ranks posted at Nand Nagri police station have been transferred to the third battalion after a vigilance inquiry was initiated against them following complaints received from the public,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) Sanjay Beniwal.Betting was rampant in that area and so were other nefarious activities. The complaints in this regard were received long back after which an inquiry was initiated. The decision to transfer them was taken a month back but could only be implemented after lok Sabha polls.

This is second such action in less than a week by Delhi Police top brass. On Tuesday, SHO of Mandawali police station was sent to the district police lines for allegedly patronising gamblers. Assistant Commissioner of Police of Madhu Vihar was also transferred for his involvement in an online betting racket. The officials had not taken any action against the accused despite information.
