While the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) managed to grab all four spots in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), it did so with a substantial margin that has the Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) in the lurch. Though the winning margin for the president, vice president and general secretary was anywhere between 2,000-3,000 votes, the joint secretary from ABVP won by a wide margin of nearly 11,000 votes. Thus, even with NSUI being in second position, their standing has clearly diminished as of their other competitors, All India Students’ Association (AISA) at third with margins of 2,000-3,000 votes from NSUI.
Joint secretary of DUSU, Aashutosh Mathur, got the maximum votes among all the four winning candidates. Thus, not only was his winning margin commendable so was his individual performance. Mathur got a total of 23,133 votes, which were 11,068 votes more than NSUI’s Abhishek Chaudhary who got 12,065 votes. These votes were not even affected by AISA which otherwise chewed into several votebanks. In fact, AISA got the least votes on this seat amounting to 9,338 votes.
The presidential seat was a close fight as Mohit Nagar beat NSUI’s Gaurav Tushir by 914 votes. However, the vice president Parvesh Malik beat NSUI’s Mona Chaudhary by 7,859 votes and general secretary Kanika Shekhawat beat NSUI’s Sikh candidate Ameet Sidhu Teema by 3,022 votes.
This year there were almost over a lakh student voters in the university, of which only 42.3 per cent exercised their franchise. The voting took place on Friday and results were out by 11.30 am on Saturday.
