No proof of 39 taken hostage in Iraq dead or alive, says Sushma

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has said that there is no proof of 39 Indian nationals, who were taken hostage in Iraq last June, are being “dead or alive”. However, the Government assumes that they are still alive, hence, it is making efforts for their release.

Swaraj, who met the families of the hostages on Saturday, said that sources have told Indian Government that these men are still alive and based on this input the Government is making efforts.

“There is no proof, as I have said earlier also that, whether they are dead or alive. But in the efforts we are making, our sources tell us that they have not been killed. And with this belief we are continuing with our efforts to secure their release,” Sushma Swaraj said.
