No Ordinance on Gay sex: Shinde

The Central Government on Saturday made it clear that there is not going to be any Ordinance on gay rights.Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told the mediapersons in Bangalore on the sideline of a programme in Bangalore that the Government was not planning any Ordinance on gay rights which took a beating after the country’s top court upheld archaic article 377 which criminalises gay sex in the country.

“Not now. Our (Congress) vice-president and president have already spoken on the issue. I am with them,” Shinde said while responding to a query whether the Government would opt for the Ordinance route to nullify the apex court judgement which had overturned a landmark Delhi High Court verdict decriminalising consensual sex among gay adults.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi were quick to come out against the Supreme Court order giving vent to their disappointment over it. Taking a clear stand, Sonia Gandhi had said she was disappointed that the apex court had reversed the Delhi High Court judgement.
