No more new States: TMC wants UPA's word

Faced with the growing agitation in support of Gorkhaland issue, Trinamool Congress on Friday demanded a categorical assurance from Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde that no further smaller States will be formed.

Raising the issue at the all-party meeting convened by lok Sabha Speaker ahead of the Parliament’s Monsoon Session beginning on Monday, Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee termed the move to create Telangana just ahead of the lok Sabha polls as an election gimmick and said that it has created problems throughout the country.

“We have said that unless the Minister of Home Affairs comes to issue a statement that no other State would be created, the country would burn. Almost all over the country, there are burning issues regarding creation of different States. Today in Assam also (there is trouble). Yesterday (Friday), some Government accommodations have been burnt. This issue has to be resolved fast. Do not make it an election issue,” he said.He said that some people are talking about the formation of Gorkhaland, but his party Government in West Bengal is not going to allow that.
