To tame the Capital’s current traffic situation, the Centre is planning to install intelligent traffic management systems (ITMS) at 40 traffic junctions across the city to help nab traffic violators.
Under the public-private partnership mode, the Government is now working on using latest technology which include IT systems and cameras connected with well-equipped modern control room at strategic locations to catch traffic offenders red-handed. The Government believes this measure will also boost their revenues through challans almost 20-fold. “Getting encouraged from the introduction of e-Challan system in Delhi and adoption of technology by the city police, we have planned to launch ITMS in PPP model in the Capital,” said Taj Hassan, Special Commissioner, Delhi Traffic Police.
“This will help in increasing our challans as there are currently 10,000 traffic violations per day. Actual violations are about 50,000 per day. With the adoption of the new technology, the challan revenue to be generated is expected to go up to Rs 800 to Rs 1,000 crore from the current Rs 50 crore per annum,” he said.
“Once the lok Sabha passes the new Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill, the challans for speeding, lane changing and speaking on mobile will go up at least five-10 times. With the introduction of this new intelligent traffic management system, more traffic violators can be taken to task,” said Oscar Fernandes, Minister of roads, transport and highways (MoRTH). “This will not just help bring traffic situation in control, but also help bring down accidents and will also boost Government coffers, by way of challans,” he said.
The Government also believes that this new system will help in optimisation of traffic lights to about 99.9 per cent with very less fault. “Police personnel will be able to regulate more traffic instead of enforcing it. Delhi Traffic Police has 6,000 personnel highest in the country and most of the time they spend time enforcing traffic laws rather than controlling traffic,” said Hassan.
