Never seen such torture: NCW on Birbhum assault

In a damaging remark that could send Mamata Banerjee Government’s human rights records slithering down further, National Commission for Women chairperson lalitha Kumaramangalam on Saturday said she had not seen in her life the kind of torture that had been perpetrated by police on a woman at Sattor in Birbhum district.

The NCW chief was visiting Sattor with her team when she made such statement.

“I have never seen such kind of torture on a woman,” she said, adding in no case a woman should be tortured like that. “Whatever be the politics, the administration should take neutral stand in such cases,” she said, adding she had taken the report from the woman and would take appropriate measures.

The victim an aunt of a local BJP supporter — who was at large for a few days as his name had figured in an FIR — was a couple of days ago picked up by senior police officers, taken into a jungle and tortured for whole night.

She was given broken fingers, slashed limbs and stinging nettle leaves were rubbed against her private parts before she was dumped in a nearby police station, the victim alleged. “I have reported everything to those who came to see my condition,” she said, demanding CBI investigation into the matter.
