The seat of the soul lies at a point between and behind the two eyebrows, in a place known as the third or single eye, writes Sant Rajinder Singh
The treasures of our soul remain hidden under layers of mind, matter, and illusion. Our attention is focused on the outer world instead of the inner one. We keep adding more coverings through our mind's desires, which lead us into anger and violence, lust, greed and attachment, deceit, and ego.
Is there any way to cut through these blockages to experience the soulIJ How can we not be washed away by the sea of lifeIJ Fortunately, saints and mystics throughout the ages have been able to venture into the realm of the soul. Just as pioneers explored the oceans when people believed the world was flat, and brave astronauts ventured into outer space, there have been explorers of the inner worlds of the soul. They overcame great obstacles, the pull of the mind and senses, to invert their attention within themselves. Discovering the doorway to the soul, they were able to enter it and remove the layers covering the soul so their true self could shine in all its pristine glory. They learned to structure their lives to find the time to live as an empowered soul. They learned how to balance their life to attend to their spiritual side as well as their worldly responsibilities. They learned how to drink of the spiritual nectar within as well as share their overflowing cup with those who were thirsty.
These inner explorers came from all backgrounds, all cultures, all religions, and all ages. Yet, they discovered the same way within and the same treasure. What they found was one and the same, but they used different terminology to describe it. They left us with the roadmap so that we, too, can take the same journey. By studying how they realised their soul, we have an opportunity to reach our Creator too.
How Can We Find the SoulIJ
Where is the soul in the bodyIJ What is its size and shapeIJ Where do we look to find it when we talk about the soul, we speak of its characteristics. But is there any physical way to describe our soulIJ
Our soul transcends physical description because it is not made of matter. Matter has weight and takes up space. But the soul is spirit and as such is not made of matter. As spirit, it is invisible. It is consciousness. When doctors dissect a body they find only matter. They cannot find the soul. The soul belongs to a dimension in which there is only light and sound, but not the light and sound we know of in this world. They are a much higher light and sound, of which the light and sound in the physical universe are but a reflection. We, as soul, are a light brighter than 16 outer suns, yet it is not a scorching, burning light. It is a light that is soothing and loving. We vibrate with a celestial harmony; that cannot be heard with our physical ears.
The soul is connected to the physical body through a silver cord that is invisible to the eyes. Saints and mystics have referred to this cord. It is a luminous thread or cord that allows the soul to transcend the body and travel into spiritual realms and return. At death, the silver cord severs from the body so that the soul does not return to the body. When the soul leaves the body in meditation, however, the silver cord remains intact so that the soul can return to the body.
The outer expression of our soul is attention. Attention is spread throughout our body. It is the soul that gives life to our body. A body devoid of a soul or in which the silver cord has been cut, is not alive. The seat of the soul lies at a point between and behind the two eyebrows, in a place known as the third or single eye. It is also referred to as the tenth door, sixth chakra, ajna chakra, daswan dwar, tisra til, and mount of transfiguration. By concentrating on this point, we can gain access to the soul. This point is a doorway through which the soul can enter into the spiritual realms within.
Knowing that there is a doorway to the Beyond located at the third or single eye is the first step. But how do we get to that doorwayIJ How do we find that pointIJ Saints and mystics throughout the ages have taught that the path to that doorway is through meditation. We need to withdraw our attention from the outer world and focus on the centre, leading to the inner realms. We must take our attention from without and focus it within.
Focussing Our Attention
Our attention is the outer expression of the soul. Through the mind and senses, our attention is diverted to the outer world. We become engaged in what is happening outside of us through the information we receive from our senses. We are also occupied with the thoughts that run through our mind, most of which revolve around what has happened in the past or what will happen in the future. We mull over our problems from the past and we plan what to do in the future. Our thoughts are like running commentaries of what is happening. Our mind replays everything that happens, and processes it with comments on every play. We judge, analyse, criticise, and evaluate everything we take in. Thus, our mind is occupied continually with this world, and our attention is diverted from the right doorway into the Beyond.
We are similar to a blind man who is put in a room and told to feel his way around the walls for the doorknob to get out of the room. He goes on touching the walls, searching for the knob, but each time he nears it, he has an itch. He takes his hand away from the wall to scratch it, and thus misses the knob. Similarly, often when we get close to that doorway, a thought intervenes to distract us and keeps us from discovering the entrance. left to chance, we, too, might not find the entrance. Therefore, we must consciously learn a technique to reach that point. Meditation is the method by which we can focus our attention at the third eye to find the doorway within. Through meditation, a whole new world opens up for us. By learning, meditation, we can gain entry through a doorway that leads us to worlds of bliss, light, and love within.
