The biological control of dengue (Aedes Aegypti) by herbal (Vernonia Anthellmintica) is possible without causing any side effects on human health. A scientific research on this plant in National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) with Department of Botany , Delhi University, has found that 2PPM (Parts per million) extract solvent larvicidal activity of the plant can peter out the larval stage of dengue mosquito.
"We have done the experiment in the site (where dengue mosquito breeds) provided to us by NCDC. There is great impact of inadequate amount of extract solvent of Vernonia Anthellminitica on the larval stage of dengue vector," said Veena Aggarwal, Professor, Plant Biotechnology laboratory, Delhi University.
She added that they have approached the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to use this extract solvent on their prescribed sites of Delhi region, instance — cluster colonies and slum areas.
"Several times I approached MCD doctors unit. We need a certification from MCD division so that the extract solvent can be used at the mosquito breeding sites," she said. "However, we will do this site experimentation under the supervision of MCD division only," Agarwal said.
Vernonia Anthellminitica is an annual herb distributed throughout India. The plant is known as Kaliziri in Hindi while the English popular name of the herb is Purple Fleabane.
The notable point of extract solvent of this herb is it kills the vector-borne at the larva stage without polluting the environment, it means that, the mosquito will be killed before reaching at the adult stage of his life cycle.
"It is completely eco-friendly and has no adverse effect on human health as well as on the air. As it is completely herbal no chemical adverse effect will be happen unlike fumigation," said Mahesh, who is leading the project on Vernonia Anthellmintica).
Meanwhile, the availability of the extract solvent is sufficient in the Botany labs as the bio-technicians have prepared a cultural set up to extract solvent from the herb.
By using the tissue culture technology and leaf compound extract, the bio-technicians cultivate the herb which is useful to vanish the larval of vector-borne.
