A 49-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of an approaching Metro train at West Delhi's Uttam Nagar station on Saturday.According to security personnel posted at the station, the man was identified as Rajendra Kumar. The suicide appeared planned as the deceased carefully chose the moment he leapt to be run over.

Rajendra Kumar was a resident of Vishwas Park Bindapur in South West district.

He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival. "The CCTV footage of the station clearly shows that he jumped in front of the Metro (train) on his own. No suicide note has been found yet,” said Sanjay Bhatia, Additional DCP, Railways.

“It appears that the victim was suffering from some ailment and was under depression. He must have taken the extreme step because of that. The family was informed and the body has been sent for postmortem. Investigations are underway,” Bhatia added.

According to the police, it was around 7:15am when Rajendra Kumar was seen standing at the Metro station. Before anybody could react, he jumped before the train. The driver tried to apply the emergency brakes but there was little stopping distance and Kumar was run over. There was a Metro shut-down for about half an hour on the line for commuters who were waiting to board trains from Dwarka to Rajiv Chowk. The hold up was for the track to be cleared and undergo mandatory checks, a police official said. The services were restored soon after,

he added.
