A man who used to run an illegal business of siphoning off lPG was on Saturday blown to bits in an explosion in his house here, police said.

Gore lal, a resident of Rahul Vihar here, used to refill lPG cylinders in his one-room tenement. The incident took place Saturday morning in which lal, originally a resident of Etah in Uttar Pradesh, was killed.Police said his body parts were found scattered 10 feet from his house. Several empty lPG cylinders and refilling equipment were recovered from his house. “The pieces of the body have been collected and sent for a post-mortem (examination)...,” said Superintendent of Police Shiv Hari Meena.

During investigations, it was found that lal used to run a taxi service as well and had installed equipment to refill lPG cylinders used in cabs. Most of the cab drivers in the area used to refill their cylinders from him. He also started refilling cylinders of domestic users.

lPG decanting from one cylinder to another using electric motors is prohibited by law but the practice is continuing due to absence of strict monitoring by the authorities concerned. The lPG (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order 2000 issued under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 bans unauthorised possession, supply and consumption of lPG, as well as unauthorised storage and transport of lPG. There is also ban on sale or distribution of lPG cylinders below or in excess of the standard weight.
