Stating that the law and order situation in Delhi is “deteriorating at an alarming rate”, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal has written to Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi, seeking details about “increasing” complaints of crimes against women. In her two letters, Maliwal, who was handpicked by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for the post, raised the issue of the brutal murder of a teenager girl Meenakshi in Anand Parbat area last month and said the incident which has “shamed” Delhi is not just the murder of an individual but reflects on the failure of entire system and society.

“It is the mandate of the DCW to monitor the safety, security and interest of women in Delhi. In light of Meenakshi murder case and the increasing rate of crime against women in the State, we wish to undertake a study on women safety in Delhi and come up with recommendations for the Centre, State Government and the Delhi police,” she wrote in her letter.

“We request you (Bassi) to provide the details of number of complaints of crime against women in the city, especially in the Anand Parbat area and if they got the police protection by the Delhi Police,” she wrote. She also asked for cases in which FIRs were registered and sought the details of unsafe areas for women.

She has demanded the list of police stations in which the highest number of complaints of crime against women was reported in 2014-15. In addition, Maliwal wanted to know the strength of the police force in Delhi and the number of women in it. Maliwal took charge as the head of the commission on July 28.
