leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta on Saturday said the prevalent water crisis in the national Capital is a result of the Government’s apathy in negotiating the issue with concerned States.
Gupta said the Government has also failed to raise the issues before the Upper River Yamuna Board (YRYB), that was formed with the purpose of distributing and regulating the Yamuna water among Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. “Efforts should have been made to resolve the crisis through mutual understanding with the concerned States instead of confronting them,” he said.
Gupta also alleged that borewells of the Delhi Jal Board have almost dried up and distribution through water tankers is controlled by water mafia.
listing out the issues relating to water shortage, Gupta said the Water Treatment Plants have become defunct due to malfunctioning and are running at half of their capacity. He also reminded that there was a plan for 24 hour water supply to one dozen colonies through pipelines which has not seen the light of the day though Kejriwal himself is heading Delhi Jal Board. “Water treatment plants are not able to treat water as per their capacity and on the other hand 50 per cent water is lost either due to thefts or because of old rusted pipes,” he said.
