The Special Cell, the anti-terrorist unit of Delhi Police, was on Saturday granted four days police remand of Abdul Karim Tunda, the explosives expert of lashkar-e-Tayyeba (leT).
A city court granted police custody to the Special Cell after the Investigating Officer (IO) submitted before the court that Tunda’s interrogation was imperative for wheedling out information on the bomb blast cases in 1997 and for allegedly helping Pakistani nationals infiltrate into India.
Tunda was produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Amit Bansal and the IO sought 10 days’ custody for further interrogation. The IO requested the court to grant the custody of the leT mastermind as they needed to establish the source of explosives which were provided to various Pakistani nationals arrested in 1998 in connection with 37 bomb blasts. The prosecution told court that the bomb blasts had taken place in 1997 in Delhi and adjoining areas and 20 cases had been registered.
“Contacts of the accused (Tunda), who helped in illegal infiltration of Pakistani nationals, are to be located and/or verified. Source of explosives is to be established. Accused belongs to Pilkhua, UP, and he is to be interrogated thoroughly,” the Special Cell told the court.
