After protests from Kannada outfits against holding a New Year’s eve show, the ruling Congress Government has denied permission to Bollywood actress Sunny leone’s New Year eve show in Bengaluru.
Kannada organisations led by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) have been opposing the proposed Sunny leone event as part of New Year eve bash by saying it would be an assault on Bengaluru’s culture.
The KRV and other outfits have been protesting against this event for past one week and the Government, bowing to pressure, took the decision of not to allow this event. Kannada activists had also burnt the effigies of the actress in protest apart from taking out rallies.
Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy told the media in Bengaluru on Saturday that the Government has denied permission to such an event. He said permission was denied keeping in view of the Karnataka High Court’s direction in a molestation case reported on MG road last year on New Year’s Eve and also fearing law and order problem.
He said, "I have instructed (authorities) not to allow such events. Don't bring her (leone) here. People are against this event. let them (organisers) have events related to Kannada culture and literature, which is our heritage.”
"It is a victory for us. Government has cancelled the programme. Had it happened here, we would have brought activists from 20 districts to Bengaluru and held a mega protest here, said an activist of KRV.
Sunny leone was to perform at a private New Year’s Eve event at White Orchid Hotel at Nagavara at the outskirts of Bengaluru on December 31 night. Bengaluru city Police Commissioner T Suneel Kumar confirmed that they have not given permission for the event.
