Talktime| Arijit Singh
He needs no introduction. In town recently on his first India Royal Stag Mega Music Tour, the man with the golden vocals Singh talked to Shalini Saksena about how this trip for him meant only to reach out to his fans
This is your first India tour. What made you agree to itIJ
There was no agreeing. I have been wanting to reach out to my fans all over and what better way than thisIJ There was no convincing, this is something that I wanted to do.
You have now been on the road for a couple of months. What have you taken away from this journeyIJ
In every city, there is a different manner in which the fans respond to my music. I don’t mean cheering and singing along. I am referring to the vibe. It makes me happy as this is an amazing opportunity for me to interact with my fans all over India.
You shun the media, keep a low profile. WhyIJ
I don’t shun the media, that’s a wrong word being put to use. I only like to keep my personal life personal. Whenever I feel there’s need to say something, I always speak my mind.
As a singer what do you feel is your responsibility towards musicIJ
The only responsibility I believe is to stay true to my art. My guruji has taught me a lot. All I want to do is pursue his path to be better with each song, each tour and each performance.
What has been the toughest lesson learnt till nowIJ
The toughest lesson that I have learnt till now is not related to music, it is something beyond that. It’s very personal.
You are called the most versatile and successful singers in the history of Indian music and Hindi cinema. How does this sit on youIJ
These are only tags given by the media and the people. I personally don’t believe in them. There have been many great singers in India and there always will be in the coming times. I want to enjoy my music throughout. I am just doing the best I can.
Who or what inspired you to become a singerIJ
I became interested in music because of my mother. During my childhood I learnt to play the tabla. I had three gurus. One taught me Rabindra Sangeet, the other how to play instruments and the third one worked on my vocals. No one forced me to learn singing or music. It is what came to me.
What has been your most humbling experienceIJ
It is very humbling when my fans come through to me with their stories about how my music has helped them in any manner. It gives me immense delight to get to know that my music is not only for the ears but for the heart as well.
What’s next on your agenda after this tourIJ
To be honest, I don’t think so far. This is going to be the best tour that India will witness and I am only working and focussed towards making that happen. Everything else will follow eventually.
