Human Rights Commission for 'full' States only, Centre tells SC

Published on:

The battle between the Centre and AAP Government has reached yet another flashpoint with the former informing the Supreme Court that it is not in favour of allowing Delhi to have its own Human Rights Commission as this facility is available only to States and not Union Territories such as Delhi.

Delhi had expected to get its own Human Rights Commission under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993 following a judgment passed by Supreme Court on July 24, 2015. In its judgment, the Court gave an express direction asking Centre to immediately constitute State Human Rights Commission in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland within six months. As the time expired, a contempt petition was filed in apex court by one Indu Prakash Singh who questioned the delay in implementing court’s judgment.
