Gujarat elections would play a pivotal role in deciding the future course of India’s politics, said Gopal Rai, Delhi Convener of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) while talking to The Pioneer on Saturday.
Rai opined that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wins these Assembly elections then they would be “marketing” their victory with an eye on 2019 lok Sabha elections. Gujarat Assembly elections are due next month and with the AAP contesting on very few seats nothing much seems to be at stake for it, however, both the BJP and the Congress are putting all of their weight on winning the elections.
“If the BJP wins Gujarat, they will do its marketing in such a manner that next Government at the centre would be of their ideology,” said Gopal Rai.
The AAP is moving very cautiously in Gujarat elections and has fielded only about 20 candidates in the 182 Assembly seats in Gujarat.
Rai also said that if the BJP looses these polls then it will definitely have to face the political crisis. “Economic crisis already exist in the country and if the BJP looses Gujarat elections then a political crisis will also arise. Then even the voices within the BJP which are silent till now will become vocal,” he said.
He claimed that common men are angry with the BJP due to measures like demonetisation and the GST but the Congress has failed to provide an alternative to them. However, he also asserted that a lot needs to be done by the AAP if it wants to stand itself as an alternative in the national politics where parties like the BJP and the Congress dominate. “A lot need to be done by us both at the organisational level and in terms of resources if we want people to give an alternative in politics at national level,” said Rai.
