Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) HN Singh suspended eight staffers of Sahibabad police station, including Inspector In-charge, his assistant-Senior Sub-Inspector (SSI), three sub-inspectors, three constables, head clerk of the police station, after an enquiry report conducted by senior police officer Rajesh Kumar from Meerut found eight police officers guilty of killing the undertrial during police custody.
The suspended staff is identified as Inspector Sudhir Tyagi, sub-inspectors Akhilesh Gaur, Neeraj Kumar Tyagi, Gajendra Singh, Atul Kumar and constables Prem Singh, Rahul and Sanjiv.
The matter came to light when a man identified as Mandeep Negi was admitted at Narendra Mohan Hospital as Negi but when his dead body was shifted to the mortuary, it was named as unidentified. The police even cremated him as an unidentified person.
According to the police record, on July 9, police officials Aditya, Ajit, Arjun and Rinku overpowered a suspected thief in Shyam Park Extension of a Sahibabad police station area and handed it over to the police after calling the control room.
After the suspect went missing from home, his family members on July 10 approached the Sahibabad police and lodged their complaint that their son is missing since July 9. Instead of registering the complaint, the police sent them back. The family members continued to be in touch with the police till July 12. However, on July 15, the police cremated the suspected thief as unidentified, alleged Satya Pal Chaudhary, the well wisher of the family who pursued their case.
On July 16, when family members identified the deceased on the basis of clothes, alleged that Inspector Sudhir Tyagi misled them, didn't register their complaint and cremated their son who was later identified as Mandeep Negi.
They alleged that their son was killed in police custody and protested outside the police station. When the police faced a tough resistance from the public, it filed a case against its informers Aditya, Ajit and Arjun under section 304 of IPC. But the family members contradicted the police claim and protested against the police atrocity. Finally the SSP took the action and suspended the eight involved police officers.
"Although the SSP has delivered justice to the grieved family but a criminal case should be registered against the erring staff" said BSP leaders Satyapal Chaudhary who contested the case thoroughly from the right beginning.
