Eight new schemes involving rehabilitation of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and cleanliness of River Yamuna were launched by the Central Government and the Delhi Government. Water Minister Kapil Mishra promised to clean River Yamuna in 36 months; thanks Uma Bharti for her cooperation in Union Government plans
The Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India and Government of NCT of Delhi have taken joint initiatives under ‘Namami Gange’ to clean Yamuna under Yamuna Action Plan-III. The projects inaugurated includes rehabilitation and upgradation of Rithala Phase-1 Sewage Treatment Plant with Tertiary Treatment Plant, rehabilitation of Ashok Nagar and Jahangirpuri sewers, rehabilitation of Trunk Sewer No. 4, Narwana Road, Anand Vihar, Hargobind Enclave and Vikas Marg sewers, rehabilitation of Trunk Sewer No. 5 and Jhilmil Sewer, rejuvenation of Chhat Ghat and river Surface Cleaning by Trash Skimmer.
Uma Bharti said, “While this programme may be titled Namami Gange, our primary objective today is to kick off work that will ensure that we can clean Mother Yamuna as well. Over Rs 1500 crore has been spent on Yamuna Action Plan-1 and 2, but still we have not received any concrete results till now. However, our new plans will ensure that we, along with the Delhi Government’s Delhi Jal Board will clean this river and make it a river that we take pride in. My younger brother Kapil has told me that he will send us a comprehensive plan based on DJB’s plans, MoWR’s plans and inputs from several international universities. I will ensure that the plan he submits is supported by the Government of India.”
“I am thankful to Umaji for showing great leadership to clean the Yamuna. The Delhi Government under the leadership of CM Arvind Kejriwal will ensure that River Yamuna is restored to its previous glory. We have brought water sports to Yamuna, the Yamuna Aarti and several pilot projects to test technologies on drains, which are a key factor of polluting Yamuna. This Yamuna Action Plan-3 will be the first plan to comprehensively help with sewage treatment and solid waste management along with bringing a proper Chhat Ghat for devotees. In the next 30 days, DJB will submit a comprehensive Yamuna cleaning plan to the CM and the Union Water Resources Minister, who I know, both have the commitment and the will to clean Yamuna. Together, we can and we will make it a reality,” Delhi Water Minister and chairman of the Delhi Jal Board, Kapil Mishra said.
