Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has requested President of India Pranab Mukherjee for his immediate intervention to replace Acting Governor of Assam Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya even as the saffron party came for the rescue of the Assam Governor and said that the Congress is intentionally misleading the people on Acharya’s remark.
The Assam Chief Minister sent a letter to the President on Saturday demanding the replacement of Assam Governor and said that the continuance of Acharya as in-charge Governor of Assam would cause immense difficulty in functioning of parliamentary democracy system and create fissures in the secular ethos of the state.
“We had welcomed Acharya to our state as we presumed that being a high Constitutional functionary, he would conduct himself fairly, cautiously and circumspectly. However, I am pained to say that ever since assuming office, the Governor of Assam, through his actions, has steadily lowered the prestige of the institution of the Governor,” Gogoi said in the letter.
“A Governor cannot be removed whenever a particular political party wants his removal. Different people may demand different things but that does not mean that everything will be accepted,” said senior central BJP leader Ram Madhav addressing media on Saturday in Guwahati.
It may be mentioned here that the Congress has been holding protest rallies in Assam demanding the removal of the Governor after the Assam Governor had recently made a remark ‘Hindustan is for Hindus’. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) had also set a deadline of one month to the Centre to remove the Governor failing which they would protest in front of the Raj Bhavan in Assam every day.
Acharya, however, later clarified that he only said that the persecuted Hindus from across the world has a right to come to India and stay and that it is our duty to receive and welcome them. Madhav further said that the Assam Chief Minister is playing divisive politics in the name of language and that the Governor’s statement is misinterpreted intentionally to confuse the people ahead of 2016 polls.
“The election is round the corner and Gogoi is trying to create a rift between the Hindi-speaking and non-Hindi-speaking people. This is very unfortunate,” Madhav said.
