Gogoi: Assam to probe Jehadi-politician nexus
Published on:

Days after arresting one of the main accused of the Burdwan blast and a key member of Jamaat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), the Assam Government is now going to probe the nexus between the jehadi outfit and politicians in the State.

The Assam Chief Minister said this on Saturday while interacting with newsmen."I have seen reports in the media today that the Burdwan blast accused Shahnur Alom had connections with some politicians. We are going to probe this," said the Chief Minister.Assam police had last week arrested Shahnur Alom, one of the key members of the Bangladesh based jihadi outfit JMB, during his interrogation confessed his proximity to some political leaders in the State.

"I do not rule out the nexus. But we do not have any evidence on this till today. We are going to probe this," said Gogoi. The Chief Minister further admitted the presence of some members of the jihadi outfits in Assam and said that while some of them come with proper visa, others infiltrate into the State.

"In India we have many cases of people who overstay their visa period. In Assam also we have some cases. I do not have the exact figure as to how many such people are there in Assam at present but this is a matter of concern and we must take it seriously. We have also not been able to track those persons overstaying the visa period," the Chief Minister said.

The Assam Chief Minister's statement assumes significance as several organisations and pressure groups in the State have been alleging that jihadi outfits have been entering the State through its porous border and demanding the State and the Central Government to seal those Indo-Bangladesh border.

Although the Assam police had so far arrested nine persons for their connections with jihadi outfits, Alom-who was arrested on December 6 this year-is one of the main operatives of the Bangladesh based jihadi outfit in Assam.last month, police and National Investigating Agency (NIA) had arrested Alom's wife Sujina Begum and their minor son from Guwahati.
