PRAKRITI ROY talks to JACQUElINE FERNANDEZ about her first English film which opened the Delhi International Film Festival

After giving big hits in Bollywood, Sri lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez is all set for the release of her first English film. The film titled Definition of Fear is a Canadian indie production and was first screened at the opening of the fourth Delhi International Film Festival.

Jacqueline is extremely excited for this film as it comprises of many firsts — her first film outside India and also her first thriller. The movie, not yet released commercially, is being screened here for the first time, totally riding on her. “It is a bit daunting for me actually. But it is great that we have come to a festival like this. A movie like Definition of Fear can get a great platform at these festivals,” she says.

What excited her about the film was that it gave her opportunity to take a risk and grow as an actor. “I wanted to leave my comfort zone, which is India. The concept is really interesting because it deals with the kind of fear we never even think about,” she says. But was surprised while filming because she found that it was difficult for her to act in English being so used to Hindi. “I felt like what am I doing hereIJ I should go back to India!” she tells you.

She says that this film was the best training experience for her because she learnt a great deal about acting and about how films are made in the West. “There is no formula of hero-heroine that works in the West as it does in India,” she says. Taking up a film that has very dark and sinister elements was not an easy task for her. But she feels that she is a director’s actor and follows her director’s instructions to the tee while giving her shots.

Jacqueline says that working in an English film will be a great advantage to her as she can now approach any other international projects with this film being her showreel. “It isn’t like I just want to be part of Hollywood. I would love to even do French or Chinese cinema. I have just taken a step and I am venturing out into global cinema,” she says.
