In a special drive to provide green cover in its area, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Friday announced to plant one lakh trees in seven days starting from August 15. Preeti Aggarwal, NMC Mayor informed that during the drive, medicinal plants and shrubs would be planted apart from the trees which provide shade.

"We have decided to plant medicinal trees such as Arju, Amaltas, Neem, Amla etc and trees which provide shade such as Gulmohar, Banyan (Peepal) with the help of active cooperation of councillors, NGOs and 'Resident Welfare Associations'," she said.

She further said that in addition, 37,455 trees have already been planted in this monsoon season during the special plantation drive.

"The trees have been planted in various organisations and institutions of the Corporation such as hospitals, parks and dispensaries. A total of 37,455 trees planted in which 24,132 are shrubs. Such drives can help in addressing global warming and urban heat island issues apart from increasing the aesthetics of the city," she said.
