More than a month after demonetisation, a sizeable number of senior citizens depending on their monthly pensions are facing hardship. lok Nath Singh, a former postal and telegraph employee, had to run from pillar to post to get his monthly pension.
His ordeal started in the first week of December when he had visited a post office at Kashmiri Gate to withdray his pension.
Then he was told to carry his Aadhar Card. Following the instruction, Singh turned up the very next day at the post office with the card, Permanent account number (PAN) card and other relevant documents in the hope of getting the money, but luck failed him as the bank ran out of money.
Singh didn’t give up and after repeated requests he was told that the limit of withdrawal was only Rs 4,000. This left the pensioner aghast.
Singh said, “I have been withdrawing a monthly pension of Rs 35,000 since 1993, the year of my retirement. The limit of Rs 4,000 is not enough to fulfil even my basic needs. Even after showing all the documents I was not allowed to withdraw my own money. I have cut down cost on medicine as well. It makes no sense to comeback again to just withdraw Rs 4,000.”
