Election's hot ticket

Published on:

Ahead of the Assembly elections in the national Capital, people belonging to different regions and communities have started to come together to mount pressure on political outfits for their share of tickets.

The first ones to join hands were members of the Uttarakhand community, who reportedly form a good chunk of voters in the city. Delhi chapter of the Uttarakhand Ekta Manch, a conglomeration of around 60 social organisations from the region, announced on Saturday that about 10,000 of the community members would be holding a mahapanchayat on December 14 at Jantar Mantar to decide the future course of action for the upcoming polls.

A majority of the Uttarakhandis living in Delhi play a key role in several Assembly seats. Of the 1.19 crore registered voters in the city, about 18 lakh reportedly belong to Uttarakhand only. A majority of these voters live in Patparganj, laxmi Nagar, Karawal Nagar, Gonda, Palam, Dwarka, Badarpur, Chhatarpur, Najafgarh, Kirari, Kasturba Nagar and New Delhi Assembly segments. The community leaders have been holding regular meetings to chart out their plans at the Garhwal Bhawan in Panchkuian Road.

Ekta Manch member Dr Vinod Bachcheti said that it was just the beginning of a long-drawn battle which the Uttarakhand’s were going to launch for their welfare in Delhi. “Our next aim will be to ensure social security for all Uttarakhandis.”
