In a shocking incident, an executive magistrate posted with the flying squad of the Election Commission of India was beaten black-and-blue in Tilak Nagar area of West district. Even police personnel attached to the magistrate were not spared.
Despite clear instruction from Delhi Police Commissioner for free and fair registration, Station House Officers (SHOs) were flouting it. An FIR was registered five days later only after the Election Commission of India (ECI) intervened. Two accused — identified as Daljeet Singh alias Happy and Harsh Suri — on charges of preventing a Government servant from discharging his duty and other Sections of IPC.
The incident happened on the night of November 23 when the magistrate Kapil had visited the spot in Mahabir Enclave area under the jurisdiction of Tilak Nagar police station. Somebody had informed the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of West, CR Garg, that liquor was being distributed in Mahabir Enclave. The DC in turn informed the magistrate to take action. A flying squad led by the magistrate raided the premises at around 11.30 pm. This was in front of a house owned by one Rajeev Sahni, a businessman. It was later known that Sahni had thrown a party at his residence to celebrate the birthday of his son. The magistrate also noticed an SUV with Uttar Pradesh registration number. The party flag of Congress was on the vehicle. The flying squad personnel started filming the SUV and those seen nursing a drink. This led to a heated exchange.
Those enjoying their drink started thrashing the magistrate and his men. They snatched the video camera from the videographer and smashed it to the ground. They also attacked the magistrate and forcibly took away his notebook. An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), a Head Constable and two constables of Delhi Police were part of the flying squad. Soon a police team with SHO of Tilak Nagar PS Inspector Karuna Sagar reached the scene. The SHO deliberately delayed the registration of the First Information Report (FIR) against the accused persons. It is alleged he tried to shield the accused and dilly-dallied on the issue. A case was later registered after ECI intervention. Two of the accused were arrested and sent to jail; the rest are on the run.
