Amid inclement weather conditions, sea divers belonging to the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) recovered the body of a police constable, who had drowned in a waterbody at Jaitapur in Ratnagiri district of coastal Konkan region, in the early hours of Saturday.
Acting on a distress call from Ratnagiri’s police control room, the Western Region ICG had despatched its sea divers to locate and recover the body of the missing police constable Prashant Vichare (26), who had reportedly drowned in a local water body.
“After an operation that lasted for four hours, our sea divers recovered the body of the police constable in the small hours of today,” a ICG’s Western Region spokesperson said.
The ICG divers carried out the entire operation in an extremely inclement weather in low visibility conditions due to darkness. Coast Guard Commander at Ratnagiri SR Patil oversaw the operation.
It may be recalled that the ICG was the first agency to rush its men and material for rescue and relief operation, when a British-era bridge constructed over the Savitri river collapsed at Mahad in Raigad district on the night of August 2, 2016, killing more than 35 people.
As many as 42 people went missing on August 2, 2016 after the two State transport buses and a few smaller private vehicles were swept away in the swollen waters of Savithri river in the immediate aftermath of the collapse of an old bridge that connects Mahad town with Poladpur in Raigad district.
