Union DoNER Minister General (Retd.) VK Singh on Saturday supported the 2,000 MW lower Subansiri Hydro Power Project and said that the project will benefit the people of the State. Singh's statement came less than a week after the State witnessed protests over the Centre’s move to restart the construction of the mega power project located at Gerukamukh along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
Widespread protests rocked the State earlier this month after Union Minister of State for Power Piyush Goyal reportedly told Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki that the Government had sorted out the impasse and that the works of the mega power project would be started soon. The protests forced Assam BJP president and Union Minister of State for Sports Sarbananda Sonowal to take up the issue with the Centre. later, Goyal assured that construction works of the project would not be taken up unless the issue is resolved properly.
"Power is a priority sector. However, there are issues with some of the power projects in the region. There is propaganda at work against the projects. However, I have seen that most of the projects here are run of river projects and my own assessment is that it is not going to cause any danger,” he said during a Press conference in Guwahati on Saturday.
