Delhi waits to be wired up for free WiFi

Published on:

less than a week after assuming office, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday maintained that his party's promises on water, power tariffs and free WiFi will reach Delhi residents "very soon". Needless to say, Delhi is filled with hope and expectation, as it waits for the Aam Aadmi Party to make good on its promise to make city WiFi-enabled.

Kejrwal said his Government is especially working on implementing the poll promise of free WiFi and said it will take at least a year. "Even my children have been asking when free WiFi will be in place. We are working on it, but it will take some time. It will not take five years. It will be done within a year," Kejriwal said.

What pray does AAP hope to achieve from free WiFiIJ The AAP manifesto says citywide WiFi can "help hugely in bridging the digital divide". The party thinks it will also provide "impetus to education, entrepreneurship, business, employment and also tie in with women's safety initiatives".

Said a student from Chandigarh, "Free WiFi would provide easy access to security apps that police have launched for women safety. Ready access to WiFi will allow the victim of an assault to reach out for help."

Embracing free WiFi would greatly help first-time visitors. Turn your phone into a travel guide without a data plan. WiFi hotspots will ease the burden of travel for migrants. Tourists will find an easier, cheaper way of getting online and experiencing a destination's best.
