Delhi Police to display Sambhal laurels

The arrest of a five-member team of New Delhi district police has compelled senior Delhi Police officials to compile a report based on records of successful raids conducted by the Operations Cell in Sambhal district of Western Uttar Pradesh.

The officers are taking the help of 10 other districts, Special Cell and Crime Branch and are also trying to acquire details from the arrested criminals of Sambhal and nearby areas.

A senior police officer said that they have directed the officer in-charge of Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of New Delhi district, Yashpal Singh, to compile a data of their work.

"We are preparing a file of our successful raids in Sambhal and Western UP. In the past one year, three raids were conducted by the Special Staff of New Delhi district, while one raid was conducted by the newly formed AATS," the officer added.

"This will help us in presenting a case before the court for seeking relief for our team that had gone to conduct a raid on Friday to arrest one suspect," Singh further said.

In the last year alone, the Operations Cell had arrested around 13 people, including four stolen-vehicle receivers from Sambhal and other parts of Western UP. They had recovered 25 stolen motorbikes from their possession.

"In our report, we are mentioning that every person in Sunwar Sarai village was using stolen vehicles and most of the time, the motorbikes belonged to the Capital. Apart from the Operations Cell, other departments like Special cell and Crime Branch had also conducted several raids there and arrested many auto lifters," said the officer adding that two months ago, three auto-lifters were arrested by the East district police from Sambhal, while a month ago two auto-lifters were arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police.

On Friday morning, the five-member team of New Delhi district police that had gone to Sambhal to arrest a suspect in an auto-theft case, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police and sent to 14 days' judicial custody by a court, following the death of the suspect.

The victim's son lodged an FIR against the police team and claimed that his father died because he was beaten up by the policemen, while he was in their custody. However, the post-mortem report of the suspect confirmed that the cause of his death was cardiac arrest.

A senior police of Sambhal district said that the Delhi Police had not informed them that they were picking up someone from the area and initial investigations revealed that the victim, Yadav, was an innocent man and had no criminal record.
